Dr. Valerie Wright
Department Chair of the Undergraduate Education Program
Dr. Valerie Wright, Ph.D., serves as Department Chair of the Undergraduate Education Program at Saint Leo University in Florida, where she has taught undergraduate and graduate education courses since 2002. With more than three decades of experience in education, Dr. Wright brings a unique perspective to teacher preparation, having spent 13 years teaching at the K–6 level before transitioning to higher education.
A dedicated advocate for educator preparation and professional growth, Dr. Wright currently serves as President of the Association of Teacher Educators (ATE) for the 2026–2027 term. Her leadership focuses on strengthening the teacher preparation profession, supporting future educators, and addressing emerging challenges facing schools and universities.
One of Dr. Wright’s signature initiatives as ATE President is the establishment of the Commission on Preservice Teacher Safety and Preparedness. Through this commission, she is leading national conversations about ensuring that teacher candidates are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to respond effectively to school safety concerns, including the possibility of an active shooter on campus. Her work emphasizes proactive preparation, collaboration among stakeholders, and the integration of safety and preparedness training into educator preparation programs.
