SPEAKERS
Dr. Shane Conwell serves as Superintendent of DeKalb County Eastern Community School District in Butler, Indiana, a school district that has been recognized for its safety and security. Before assuming his current position he spent 15 years in a variety of roles at the junior high, high school, and district level including teacher, guidance, administrator, chief financial officer, and assistant superintendent. He is a certified Advanced Level School Safety Specialist through the State of Indiana’s Department of Education. Dr. Conwell received his Master of Education in Organizational Leadership from Cleveland State University and Doctorate in Education from Ball State University. His doctoral thesis was recently nominated for the Ball State University Foundation Distinguished Dissertation Award of 2021. Recent research and literature Dr. Conwell has published examines the significance of non-hardened preventative approaches to deterring school crime and violence along with improving overall student well-being throughout the United States. Dr. Conwell’s last presentation he served as the keynote speaker for the DeKalb County Safe Schools Commission.

School Threat Assessment Teams: A non-hardened preventative approach to deterring school crime & violence.
Discover practical examples, resources, and outlined steps for threat assessment team implementation from an acting Superintendent. Attendees will also explore school safety and security research spanning 20 years along with findings from a recent national study examining common characteristics of schools that had and did not have threat assessment teams with school crime and violence incidents.At the end of this session, participants will be able to identify effective non-hardened safety measures relating to school threat assessment teams.
Learning Objectives
- The session will summarize common characteristics and proactive measures relating to school threat assessment teams and deterring school violence.
- The session will provide examples and resources demonstrating steps toward developing and implementing a school threat assessment team.
- The session will review theoretical framework and research relating to schools with/without threat assessment teams and school violence.
Participant Outcomes
- Participants will be able to summarize 3-5 common characteristics of school threat assessment teams.
- Participants will be able to list, from provided examples, at least 3-5 steps in developing/implementing a threat assessment team in their school.
- Participants will be able to evaluate their current school threat assessment team and determine at least 2-3 areas for improvement.
- Based on theoretical framework and research, participants will be able to differentiate themes between schools with/without threat assessment teams.
- Participants will be able to identify 3-5 proactive threat assessment team measures for their team/school.
