Jimmy Lacy began his career in school transportation in 1989 as a substitute bus operator. After discovering a passion for the field, he transitioned to a full-time bus operator in 1992. Lacy’s dedication to student safety and operational efficiency led to a promotion to Supervisor of Transportation at the East Bank Bus Terminal in 2006. A year later, Lacy took on the role of Supervisor of Transportation Safety and Training, allowing him to further shape the standards of safety and training in the field. After nearly three and a half decades of service with Kanawha County Schools, Lacy transitioned to the role of State Director of Transportation at the West Virginia Department of Education in 2024.
What began as a “give it a try” job has grown into a lifelong career driven by the rewarding experience of watching students grow and develop. Lacy’s passion for school transportation is rooted in the belief that a well-trained workforce is the cornerstone of a safe, economical, and efficient transportation system. He remains committed to fostering a transportation system that prioritizes safety, reliability, and cost-effectiveness, ensuring students are safely transported every day.
