Dr. Eric Sparkenbaugh

Dr. Eric Sparkenbaugh has been a public school counselor, principal and administrator for the past 30 years. He is currently commissioned as the Assistant Superintendent for the Montour School District, near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and also serves as their School Safety and Security Coordinator. Eric earned his B.A. in Psychology from Bucknell University, Master of Science in Education from Duquesne University, and his Doctor of Education from the University of Pittsburgh. He authored the elementary school safety resource, “BEE READY to Run, Hide or Fight. Everything Will BEE Alright!”, and developed the EMPOWER Program which teaches educational employees how to effectively Run, Hide or Fight.

Innovative Strategies to Help Prepare for an Active School Shooter or Violent Intruder
This presentation will expose participants to two unique safety resources recently developed and implemented by educators in Pennsylvania. The elementary safety book "BEE READY to Run, Hide or Fight. Everything Will BEE Alright! The EMPOWER Program, which uses computer based and hands-on instruction to teach staff members specific Run, Hide, Fight strategies.Learning Objectives
Participants will become familiar with age appropriate and staff freindly safety resources which will increase response options and staff confidence.- Gain additional knowledge regarding age-appropriate and pragmatic safety resources
- Increase response options to an active shooter or a violent intruder
- Improve staff confidence to address emergency situations
- Acquire transferable skills
Participant Outcomes
- Participants will learn how to explain active shooter situations and drills to young children and better prepare
- Participants will identify specific Run, Hide, Fight strategies
- Participants will be exposed to the EMPOWER fight techniques of weapon improvisation, ambush, joint manipulation, weapon neutralization, and swarm.
