Chris Abildgaard, Ed.D, NCSP, LPC, is the owner and director of the Social Learning Center (SLC), LLC. located in Cheshire, CT. Dr. Abildgaard earned his Doctor of Education in School Psychology from Loyola University Chicago, is a Nationally Certified School Psychologist & a Licensed Professional Counselor with a specialization in Autism Spectrum Disorders and Neurodiverse learners. Dr. Abildgaard also holds a Graduate Certificate from the University of Massachusetts Lowell in Behavioral Interventions in Autism. In addition to his clinical, consultation and supervision duties at the SLC, Chris teaches at several top universities in Connecticut. He is Adjunct Professor in the Psychology Department at the University of Hartford and currently heavily involved as an Adjunct Professor in the Special Education Department at the University of St. Joseph (USJ). His duties at both universities include teaching, curriculum development and supervision.

Neurodiversity & Mental Health & Rethinking Educational Success
The last few years have been a strain on nearly everyone, with routines disrupted, and stress and anxiety running high. For our neurodiverse students they are experiencing alarmingly high rates of mental health concerns which impact classroom performance. This seminar will examine how neurodiversity, mental health and cognitive self regulation co-exist to define educational success today.The intent of this seminar is to provide an overview of neurodiversity in the classroom and examine mental health barriers to educational success.
Learning Objectives
- At the end of this seminar, attendees will be able to define neurodiversity explain it's impact on education.
- At the end of the seminar, attendees will reflect on their style of communication with students to promote self motivation and cognitive regulation.
- At the end of the seminar, attendees will be able to better reflect on language to increase cognitive self regulation for home and school.
Participant Outcomes
- Participants will be able to better describe neurodiversity to other colleagues, families and students.
- Participants will identify 2-3 ways to better communicate to students to improve one's social-emotional functioning and self motivation.
- Participants will be understand and apply communication techniques when interacting with families around the topic of cognitive self regulation.
