It happened to Us. Are you Ready? Las VegasKirk Carpenter spent thirty-one years in public education, all in the Aztec Municipal School District. While in the district, Carpenter spent eight years as a teacher. The last twenty-three years have been spent in administration, six years as Assistant Principal, two and a half years as Principal, two and a half as Deputy Superintendent, and twelve years as Superintendent. Coaching football and baseball were important parts of Carpenter’s career for a total of fourteen years.
At the state level, Carpenter served on the Board of the New Mexico Activity Association, was the President for the Board of the Cooperative Educational Services for the State of New Mexico, President of the New Mexico Superintendent’s Association, and on the board of the New Mexico Coalition of Educational Leaders. Carpenter considers one of his greatest accomplishments to be the Sandy Hook promise programs, and helping to bring them to other superintendents and school districts in the State of New Mexico.
In 2014, Carpenter received one of the highest honors in his educational career when his fellow Superintendents voted him as the New Mexico Superintendent of the Year. Additionally, in 2021 he was inducted into the New Mexico Coalition of Educational Leaders Hall of Fame. Las VegasKim Hinckson Pendleton, Ph.D. is a native of Guyana, South America. Dr. Pendleton immigrated to the United States at the age of 13 to live the dream of earning an education by her late grandmother, Dorothy Harte. Dr. Pendleton received a Bachelor of Arts in Biological Sciences from Fisk University in 1988, a master's in educational leadership from Northwestern State University in 2008, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Leadership from Keiser University in 2014. She is the oldest of eight children and the mother of three adult children, Justin, Erika, and Gabrielle. A member of professional and social organizations, including Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Dr. Pendleton is community service minded.
After 10 years of service as an instructionally focused assistant principal, Dr. Kim Pendleton is the principal of Southwood High School in Shreveport, Louisiana since January 2020. Dr. Pendleton brings a wealth of knowledge from her tenure at Northwood High School where she worked intensively to increase career and technical opportunities for students while also partnering with teachers to increase training aligned to changes in state standards, dual enrollment, and Advance Placement. Her resume includes noteworthy accolades including reducing academic failures at campuses she has served by up to 69 percent and increasing graduation rates by up to 10 percent in a single year. Dr. Pendleton began her career in Caddo Parish Public Schools as a science teacher after a career in child protective services for the City of New York and serving as a coordinator for treatment alternatives to incarceration in the state university system of New York, El Paso, Texas and Shreveport, Louisiana. After 13 years of classroom experience, she began her first administrative role in 2009 at Huntington High School and moved to Northwood High School in 2012. In addition to her work in Caddo, Dr. Pendleton is respected across the region for her role with various groups including serving as the lead school team evaluator as part of the AdvancED accreditation team, the leading accreditation agency for K-12 and university schools and systems.
Dr. Pendleton service as principal addresses the whole child by involving all community stakeholders. Among her top goals for Southwood, she desires to continue to build the school’s biotech magnet program, intertwine career and technical industry-based certifications with courses offered at the campus, and improve brand awareness and recognition of the school.
A high school is Southeastern United States had a series of gang/group related fights over a three-day period. A group of parents met with the principal and created a group called "Dads on Duty", a group of men serving as role models to help support the student population despite their race, culture, or ethnicity. Steve correspondingly assist with the supervision of the Crisis Team and is the liaison for the law enforcement, fire departments and other emergency services. Steve is a former fire fighter, Deputy Sheriff and Police Officer, his extensive background in public safety is incredible. Chris spent 4 years driving both special education and regular education routes. In 2006, Chris was hired as the Director of Transportation for Greater Albany Public Schools in Albany, Oregon. In January of 2013, he returned to the Eugene School District as their Director of Transportation and Fleet Services. In January of 2021, Chris was hired as the Director of Transportation for David Douglas School District in Portland, Oregon.
He has presented numerous driver and administrative trainings on the local, state and national levels. Chris’s passion lies with helping others in the pupil transportation industry. From driver training to administrative mentoring, Chris loves to help others learn and grow while also continuing to broaden his knowledge base within pupil transportation.This presentation will help prepare for responding to the unthinkable: a fatal wreck that involves a school bus or other district vehicles. Two fatal wrecks will be discussed, one involving a school bus driver and the other involving another driver who was fatally injured. We will discuss preparation, action, response, and decompression techniques as well as key findings to how these occurred.- Preparation: How will you prepare for a potential fatal wreck? This includes mental and physical focus of one's self and staff.
- Action: Knowing what to do, when to do, and how to do when you are thrown into the emergency.
- Response: How to properly respond and help emergency authorities, OSHA, Department of Education, district/location authorities.
- Decompression: Techniques to take care of yourself, your family, and your staff.
- Will be prepared to focus on the emergency at hand, delegate necessary and unnecessary items to proper staff/officials.

The U.S. and Colorado specifically have experienced several tragic acts of violence in schools motivated by personal grievances and ideological perspectives that justify violence. Preventing these acts and improving school safety has become a goal for many jurisdictions. In examining radicalization and targeted violence in schools and other public spaces, multi-disciplinary teams have been identified as a promising practice. Cross-System approaches include law enforcement, school-based providers, administrators, and outside mental health professionals and service providers to assess risk, determine appropriate countermeasures, and connect vulnerable youth on the pathway to violence to pro-social support and services before they engage in criminal activity. In partnership with schools, community mental health professionals, local service providers, and subject matter experts such as Autism Services and Programs, the Aurora Police Department's co-responder (Crisis Response Team) provides collaborative community-focused intervention strategies to prevent targeted violence among vulnerable populations. In this presentation we will discuss how to improve outcomes when Crisis Response Teams are summoned.
Personal Perspectives: As an Autistic adult with co-occurring mental and physical health challenges, I have had plenty of interactions with first responders. Lovett began a 30+ year career in education as a Math and Science teacher and taught for 7 years before becoming an Administrator. Trent spent 8 years as Assistant Principal and Principal at North Marshall Middle School, 4 years as Principal at Marshall County High School and is currently in his 11th year serving as Superintendent of the Marshall County School District.On January 23, 2018 a tragic school shooting occurred at Marshall County High School in Benton, Kentucky. 5th National Student Safety & Security Conference & Workshop 2021
The 5th National Student Safety & Security Conference and Workshop will be held on November 17-19, 2021 and will feature real-world simulations of community response to school shootings and related tragedies. It is the national event to invite leaders representing every sector of society to model a community process to help stamp out all forms of school violence, including shootings, bullying, dating violence, vandalism, gang activity, and catastrophic events such as school massacres. In addition, special workshops will examine latest community resources to fight teenage suicide, alcohol and drug abuse, and aggressive driving among high school and college students. Compelling case studies will be presented over the 3 days of the conference, offering new important findings on headline-grabbing incidents of school violence, their cost to society, and how they have impacted local prevention, preparedness, response and recovery processes. The tabletop exercises, skillfully moderated by risk communicators, will encourage extended audience participation and explore effective methods of communication, coordination and collaboration at the local level.
Role-Playing Topics Include:
Response: Activating the emergency response infrastructure, warning signals, student complaints, first response, protecting targets and hostages, types of violence, survival techniques, news by cell phone, regaining control, chain of command, emergency response routes, evacuation procedures, school closings, notifying parents, anticipating escalation, law enforcement information sharing, medical procedures, dealing with the media, reaction on the Internet. Recovery: Overcoming fear of returning to class, debriefings, victim needs, survivor needs, families of offenders, call-in lines, grief counseling, health services and resources, statements to students and parents, academic support, investigation procedures, removing names, funerals and anniversaries, signals for closure, how to orient new students and their families. Prevention: School Crime Watch, drug-free zones, gun-free zones, Zero-tolerance messages, gang apparel and student dress codes, mentoring, parent cooperation, law enforcement resources and presentations, information kits and advisories, engaging the business sector, restrictions in hallways, locker areas, bathrooms, parking lots, cafeteria and other high-risk areas. Preparedness: What you can do right now, assessing threat and potential victims, designating crisis planning and crisis management teams, exercising the student safety plan, reviewing civil and criminal options, patrols and security systems, video monitoring, crime maps, creating a school safety who’s who, photo ID database, including private sector resources, dealing with outside threats, media relations, legislative actions, town hall meetings, releasing information, crisis kits, preparing the lines of communication, sharing best practices, taking preemptive action.

In response to the nationwide alarm over youth violence in our schools, the National Student Safety & Security Conference and Workshop Conference invites high school and university administrators, campus security officers, mental health professionals, emergency management experts, first responders and law enforcers, as well other experts to meet November 17-19, 2021 in Las Vegas. Our purpose is to create an ad hoc multi-sector crisis management consortium during the event, to be studied as a model by communities around the country. Speakers will help attendees develop effective action plans that are unique to their own communities and engage the widest range of local stakeholders to make our high schools and college campuses safe and secure — the way learning environments really should be. The National Student Safety & Security Conference & Workshop is organized by SyllabusX, Virginia, international specialists in emergency planning events and disaster recovery conferences.
